FEELING STUCK?
Work through the past to get the future you deserve
You’re tired of feeling ...
overwhelmed, powerless, invisible, unimportant, worthless.
When we experience a traumatic event our brains go into survival mode, often triggering a 5F (fight/flight/freeze/fawn/flop) response. When this happens, the rational brain shuts down to allow emotion to help us survive the experience. The event is then integrated into our memory through an emotional lens. Sometimes we are able to process the experience and compare what happened with what we know about ourselves, supporting a balanced memory of the event. Other times it can be too overwhelming to process adequately. When that happens, our logical thoughts don’t get the chance to challenge the emotional version of events and can be left with strong negative feelings about ourselves relative to the experience.
This imbalance leads us to feel a disconnect, like “I know I’m a good person, but I don’t feel like that is true.” Trauma-focused therapy can help you look at those beliefs through a different lens.

Here’s what we’ll do together
We will discuss the different therapy modalities, and you can choose the approach that resonates with you.
If you are tired of struggling with the past as it shows up in your present, this might be the right time for trauma-focused therapy. I am trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), as well as Nightmare-Image Rehearsal Therapy to support you on this journey.
We can talk about what each therapy would look like for you and where your readiness lies. It’s ok if you’re not sure or do not feel ready for that level of care. We can start where you are at and see where it takes us.
you are not defined by your trauma
Past experiences don’t have to continue holding you back. You are strong enough to create the future you envision for yourself.

FAQs
-
CPT is a cognitive behavioral approach that focuses on creating more adaptive beliefs about ourselves and traumatic experiences. It is a 12-session model that includes weekly homework.
EMDR uses a more somatic approach to help desensitize and reprocess past experiences. It does not have a defined time frame, nor does it involve active work outside of session.

An important part of any trauma-focused therapy is ensuring that you have adequate coping skills and resources to tolerate distress that will come up during this type of therapy. Readiness is something we will discuss and can be evaluated over time.
-
Not necessarily. With CPT it is important to move through the model with fewer breaks, and EMDR can be more flexible. Sometimes life gets in the way, though, so pressing pause for a session or two can be necessary.
